“Husband and Wife Dentist and GP win Dual Public Service Awards”

Khalid and his wife Rehana had double the reason to celebrate recently.

At the 2017 Fusion Awards, Dr. R. Master won the Public Service trophy and Dr. K. Master received the Finalist award for the hotly contested Community Group of the Year category on behalf of the educational charity; Abu Hanifah Foundation (AHF). The glitzy ceremony was held at King George’s Hall, Blackburn on Saturday May 13th.

The Fusion awards aim to honour unsung community heroes. Both Khalid and Rehana selflessly devote nearly 1000 hours a year to charity on a voluntary basis, whilst juggling full time jobs and raising a young family.

Rehana fulfils two key roles within the Foundation that of Chief Welfare Officer and Head of Health Services. Khalid is a Founding Trustee and Chairman of all AHF service arms such as the; Evening and Weekend Supplementary Schools, Football Academy, Girls Sports Club, Classes delivered in British Sign Language for the Deaf,  Scouts Colonies and Disabled Sports to name but a few.

AHF aims to produce the next generation of role models by raising aspirations of young people who go on to lead purpose driven lives by making pioneering contributions to their immediate society and beyond. In a space of just 6 years, AHF has become one of the most inspirational community groups of their kind in the region, by changing the way their community is perceived and showing how volunteering can have such a positive impact on neighbourhoods.

Through their unique ‘holistic education’ vision and a series of ground breaking programmes they have changed the landscape of supplementary educational provision. Collectively, their services benefit almost 1000 people EVERY week!

Dear Dr. Khalid and Dr.Rehana Master,

I am writing to extend my heartfelt thanks for your attendance at our Presentation Evening.  As our guest speakers you were inspiring and we could not have selected better role models from our local community.

It was enthralling to hear about your journeys to success and your words echoed the values, determination and conviction we try to instil in our students.  I am absolutely certain that as well as our young people, there were many adults in the audience who could relate to your stories.  We are very privileged to have such highly esteemed individuals as yourselves, as supporters of our school.

I found your talk to be very relevant to our students as they embark upon their own journeys and I am sure your words will encourage and motivate them to chase their own dreams and achieve the very best they are capable of. Your presentations were absolutely fabulous, full of true emotion that whole audience palpably connected with and your accomplished and professional style was refreshingly honest. The silence in King George’s Hall as you spoke and the complete attention from the audience was a testament to the pertinence of your messages and the eloquence of your delivery.

I have been inundated with requests from inspired staff asking if you would be willing to come into school to deliver further motivational speeches to our young people, in particular our year 10 and 11 students.  I eagerly look forward to working with yourselves in the future.

Mrs Atkinson, our head teacher, said she had to hold back the tears at one point due to the poignancy of your message and went on to conclude: ‘Your talk loudly echoed the messages I convey and emphasised that, with hard work, determination and resilience you can become what you aspire to.’

Mr Braithwaite said:  ‘The students had been excited and motivated to hear from two local heroes who have reached some of the highest echelons of their professions yet make time to give back to their local communities through their charitable works, which they found to be inspired as well as admirable.’

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening and we, as a school, look forward to working collaboratively with you again in the very near future.

With huge appreciation,

Yours sincerely,

S Hussain.

Deputy Headteacher

Blackburn Central High School presentation

Drs. Khalid and Rehana Master were privileged to be invited as guests of honour to the year 12 Blackburn Central High School presentation evening held recently at the prestigious venue of King George’s Hall.

Their duties included the handing out of awards and delivering a keynote speech to an audience of 400 students, parents, teachers and honourable guests such as school governors and the Mayor and Daughter Mayoress of Blackburn.

Their speeches focused on their personal journeys to success in their respective careers in dentistry and medicine. They highlighted the many personal tragedies they had experienced in their lives as well as the numerous hurdles they had to overcome, in order for them to be in the privileged positions they find themselves today.

Given the fact that they are both local, having been brought up in Blackburn and Bolton respectively, they both came from humble beginnings, both their parents were extremely poor, they both attended state schools, they are both of Indian heritage and they are both practicing Muslims resonated very much with the audience and proved to highlight the fact that they are two perfect local role models who are true to life examples of what can be achieved with dedication, perseverance, application and ‘never say die’ attitude.

Their speeches served to raise the spirit and aspirations of the children as it highlighted the fact that you don’t need to be affluent or have a privileged education to be successful. Furthermore, all the charity work that they do to help less fortunate than them in the local and wider community adds up to nearly 1000 hours between them every year, which is truly remarkable. All the children were encouraged to follow their dreams and aspirations with conviction coupled with resilience. Their stories are living examples of what can be achieved if you have a vision and you seize the opportunities that you are offered; Carpe Diem.

Abu Hanifah Foundation

Dr Khalid Master of Bank View Smile Studios is a Founding Trustee and Chairman of the multi award winning Abu Hanifah Foundation (also known by the abbreviation AHF). AHF an innovative and world recognised, non for profit educational charity which is changing the landscape, redefining standards and producing the next generation of Muslim role models who are productive British citizens, leading meaningful, purpose driven lives, being able to make pioneering contributions to the immediate society and beyond, ultimately making the world a better place. (UK Charity Registration Number: 1144134)

The charity was setup in September 2011 by 9 Muslim professionals and is based in Blackburn, Lancashire. With the help of 6 teachers and a dozen volunteers in the first year, AHF helped around 80 children get a broad and balanced Islamic education by providing a rich and rewarding environment which developed enquiring, creative minds with a spirit of curiosity. AHF aims to assist each learner to comprehend the complexity of the world in which they live and understand that their own well-being is closely connected to that of all others around them, regardless of race, religion, creed, colour or nationality. Now in its 5th year, AHF now has over 150 staff and volunteers teaching more than 1000 children EVERY WEEK through the weekday evening supplementary school (madressah), 6 Muslim Scouts colonies, the AHF FC football academy which has over 400 young boys and girls aged 4-12, as well as many other voluntary services.

The most unique part of AHF is the ‘holistic education model’ which the whole premise is built upon. Most educational institutes focus primarily upon intellectual literacy of the learner and most religious education includes spiritual literacy too. However, AHF focuses upon ALL 8 domains of growth and development which also include, moral, personal, physical, social, cultural and interpersonal literacy’s. It is through the successful implementation of this unique model that AHF has attracted and hosted local, national and even international interest and visitors.

Together with his wife Dr Rehana Master, who is a medical GP working 6 days a week, a full time mum of 2 beautiful boys, chief welfare officer and head of AHF Health services, Khalid and Rehana incredibly donate more than 1000 voluntary hours between them to AHF!  It’s a miracle that Khalid has time to be a partner and director of a multi award winning dental practice; Bank View Smile Studios also based in Blackburn, Lancashire.

Khalid is a highly talented dentist who graduated from Liverpool University in July 2000 and has worked in general dental practice ever since. Under Khalid’s stewardship BVSS has won more than 24 regional and national, dental and business awards including the prestigious accolade of the ‘Best Dental Clinic in the UK’ twice, as well as the Best Dental Team in the UK. The highly successful practice has also attained the Investors in People- Gold award, an accreditation that is rarely attained across all industry and unheard of within dentistry. Khalid has won 3 awards himself including Best Dentist, Best Employer and Best Smile Makeover in the UK.

Khalid studied dentistry to be able bring comfort, confidence and happiness into patients’ lives. His role as a healthcare provider entails the enablement of 3 fundamental human necessities; to eat, speak and socialise without pain, discomfort or reservation.

Khalid is very passionate about his profession and firmly believes in ‘giving back’ to the community and to the profession. One of the ways he combines both beliefs is to host high school, college and university students, as well as other dentists for work experience and work shadowing.

He is a role model for young people of all denominations, he is very popular and has facilitated over 80 experiences at the practice over the last few years alone, thereby successfully helping approximately 10% of students to gain entry into the most highly competitive university course available, based on the ratio of places on offer and the number of applicants nationally.

Khalid’s faith supports him in his work and everyday life as a British Muslim by keeping him focused on helping the wider community, being a role model, being appreciative of the special skills he possesses and utilising them for the betterment of humanity.
