Support for plastic or acrylic dentures comes from the soft tissues (gums) only, which is why they are referred to as ‘tissue borne’. Although the plastic components surround natural teeth (in the case of partial dentures), they do not acquire any significant support from them. Acrylic partial dentures occasionally have metal clips or clasps, but this is to help retain the denture and keep it in place.
Acrylic partial dentures are cheaper to manufacture and require less sophistication in design than cast Cobalt Chromium partial dentures and are often prescribed and fitted when cost is a consideration or the denture is going to be used temporarily or placed immediately on the day of the extraction(s) as an interim measure.
